Breed Summary
Although they were originally bred as big-game hunters who could single-handedly take on a wolf, Wolfhounds are now quite serene and make excellent family companion dogs. Males can measure almost 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh 180 pounds, while females are slightly smaller. So, even though they are generally patient with kids, they are quite large and should still be monitored around small children.
Due to their strong prey drive, these sighthounds do best when they have a large fenced yard to run around in. They should also be exercised regularly, either on a leash or in a fenced play area.
Irish Wolfhounds, as with most large breeds, are unfortunately prone to bloat, which can be a life-threatening condition. As such, careful and controlled feeding is recommended, as well as avoiding vigorous exercise around mealtimes. Irish Wolfhound owners will want to brief themselves on the symptoms of bloat to keep their beloved dogs safe and happy.

Irish Wolfhounds are very focused on growing, and how we feed them should help them do just that. Since they have so much growing to do, they need higher amounts of nutrients than adult dogs, especially proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and — don’t forget — water. It’s still important to not overfeed puppies, so make sure to portion food and keep treats to no more than 10% of their caloric intake.
